Bell Atlantic has announced the selection of ADSL as one of two last-mile technologies (the other VSB). The company projects 30% market penetration within a few years and, once the FCC approves the merger with NYNX, their market will greatly expand.

Does Amati enter this picture? My read is that Bell Atlantic probably will select DiviCom (owned by COMS) and Zenith Electronics (ZE) to manufacture the set tops needed to receive and transmit the data stream. Zenith and DiviCom now are producing VSB boxes for Americast ($1 billion plus order for 3 million set tops) and, aparently, have the ability to add ADSL with a simple add on.

My read is that the telcos all want as much flexibility as possible in their last mile systems and ADSL will play a major role. Just don't know how much Amati benefits from this major transition.
