Classical economics assumes rationally self interested actors in the market. This is true more often then not but it isn't always true. However sooner or later the irrational people who don't act in their own self interest tend to go bankrupt restoring some sort of balance to the market. But this can take a long time and if the government intervenes it can be prevented from happening in specific markets at a sometimes great cost. I see the subsidies as such an intervention to support the irrational.
