Gerald, " I guess, then, that you do not think very highly of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 -- or medicare." Actually I do not think much of social engineering, nor do I think future generations owe anything to the retirees. This country does not owe them anything, except for the fact that they promised it.
"I, too, tend to support a more libertarian approch than that taken by the Great Society, and I agree that Johnson made a lot of mistakes, not the least of which was getting us into Vietnam. "
Huh? Johnson did not get us into Vietnam,Eienhower started it,Kennedy pursued it,and Johnson's huge ego prevented us from getting out. Also Vietnam was an invasion by Americans to fight a war with communists on someone else's turf.
"What do you say to the person who just got laid off but whose age makes it excruciatingly difficult for him or her to get rehired? Or, how about the uneducated, black, female unemployed? What are they supposed to do?"
Our only resource as humans is our minds and our educations. Its sort of Darwinian, but those people that are not constantly reinventing themselves, will get crushed under the weight of a technological society.
"? And who is going to pay for the retraining? And how is this man's family going to (a) eat while the retraining is going on, and (b) deal with the big drop in income which this theoretical man is likely to suffer if and when he gets rehired?
Suffering is part of life, and those that suffer, will be tempered like steel. Who should pay for retraining? Does society owe us for our mistakes and misfortunes? They maybe should help, but they are not the ones who should retrain us,those that will benefit from a more intelligent and well trained work force should pay. Those that benefit should pay,and only those that do.
