A Man Who Converted To Christianity From Islam Is Sentenced To Death

20 March 2006: There is an active movement by many Islamic organizations and intellectuals to insinuate Sharia law into Western society, always with the assurance that Sharia law and democracy can co-exist. It appears that those who argue on behalf of Sharia law want to see constitutional or civil law subjugated to the tenets of Islam; one such argument is embraced by Dr. Muqtedar Khan, Chair of the Department of Political Science and Director of International Studies at Adrian College in Michigan. Dr. Khan asserts that it is possible to give primacy to Sharia law and still have a democratic society.
This debate can be easily settled by citing the current situation in Afghanistan, where Sharia law has been incorporated into the constitution of that country when ratified in 2004, after the country was liberated from the barbaric clutches of the Taliban. Although freedom of religion is assured by the constitution, it is subjugated by Sharia law. According to the constitution of Afghanistan, “no law can be contrary to the sacred religion of Islam.” As a result, Abdur Rahman faces the death penalty for converting to Christianity from Islam. Rahman was arrested after his family reported his conversion to police.
According to Supreme Court judge Ansarullah Mawlavizada, Rahman will be charged with abandoning Islam. The judge also noted that “the prosecutor says he should be executed on the basis of the constitution," although suggested that his life could be spared if he returned to Islam. "If he does not, he will be punished."
