I'm having a ball with this screamer. A lot different than my old 486 DX2-50 Win 3.1.
Transfering the data was easier then I thought it was going to be. I still have the other computer sitting next to the new one so that made it easier.
With MS Office Excel Ver 5 on my old one, I opened the workbook that I wanted to transfer. Went to FILE and then SAVE AS. I selected the A: drive and copied it to the floppy. Opened the next workbook and did the same. On my new computer, I have MS Excel 97. I then put the floppy with the workbook files in the A: drive of the new computer. Opened MS Excel 97 at a blank workbook and went to FILE and then OPEN. Selected the A: drive and picked one of the two files and hit OK. Excel 97 recognized it was a different version and asked if I wanted to transfer the format to Excel 97 format. Answered yes and did the same thing with the second file.
With MS Word Ver 6.0, I used File Manager on my old computer and copied all the *.doc files to a floppy. On the new computer I went to Windows Explorer and copied them right into the MS Word 97 directory. When I opened them they were OK.
When I transferred my data with Quicken it was a little different. I did a Quicken backup function to a floppy and then did a Quicken restore function on the new computer.
Turbo Tax was a function of importing the data from a floppy I made of last years taxes.
My email and bookmarks was handled by Netscape Communicators new import utility. This utility will import other browsers favorities and address books. I even used SmartUpdate to download a new version of Comm with a few plugins. Every thing was handled automatically and went smooth.
I know this was long winded but tried to explain it as simply as I could for new users to understand. Hope this helped.

Edit....I just saw your edit. I got a Gateway 400MHz,64M Ram, 10 Gig hard drive, 17" monitor, DVDIII CD Rom, 31/2" floppy, Zip drive, HP 722C Deskjet printer, Boston Speaker system, Win 98 and Office 97, Quicken and other software. |
