Unfortunately, I do not think that those who brought it into being were as clear sighted about its futility. Internationalism, as the logical successor to imperialism, was voguish at the time. The idea of creating a permanent means for the Allies to dominate the world and ensure its shape had real appeal. There were people who honestly thought that the creation of competing blocs was avoidable, because we were all really after the same thing, and capitalism and communism would soon converge, more or less like the Swedish model of social democracy. People like Henry Wallace and Eleanor Roosevelt believed in the UN well enough. Fortunately, wiser heads prevailed......
