We paid bail for 5,000 first-time arrestees accused of minor crimes, so that they wouldn't sit for years in jail waiting for the slow justice system to move.

This is a really excellent thing, they should be justly proud.

People are innocent until proven guilty.

And even if they are indeed guilty of a minor crime, first offense, they probably aren't looking at a lengthy jail sentence. In America, first offense, minor crime, you pay a fine or do community service.

I've been called up on very short notice to do just this, file a motion to get an accused person out of jail because he's been there a long time, longer than he'd do time. The persons who called me were either working for the jails or working for the courts. It's part of due process, not to suffer cruel and unusual punishment.
