If one could actually convince his friends to buy winning stocks on his recommendation, he would be morally obligated to become a broker.
It is hard as hell not to tout one's successes. I refuse to tell my friends or students that I had everything in DELL, CISCO, and Intel over the last four years, or had moved into QCOM, JDSU or CMGI over the last 15 months. They would only hate me if they knew. "Why didn't you tell me years ago." When I mention a company favorably in my strategic management class I urge my students that if they chose to act on it, to write and date a memo that they have interpreted the message as a tip and that I am neither responsible for their wins or losses. They agree to do their own DD and to make their own decisions. Last semester, a student came to me and said his father had invested heavily on QCOM (which had been the student's project company). He was delighted with his son, his investment, the son's professor. and the University. He became a very rich man by listening to his son's advice.
