U.S. mortgages spreads tighter; hedge funds eyed

<< Selling from troubled hedge funds, which whipped the mortgage securities market around recently, was not a major factor early Thursday but the threat of another blowup still loomed large.

Focus has shifted to ''the next big hedge fund guy who has a problem,'' the head trader said. ''I don't know who that is, and I don't even know if there is a guy,'' but the concern lingers.

There was talk of heavy Treasuries selling early this morning by a bank or hedge fund, Treasuries and mortgage securities traders said. Heavy issuance headed for the U.S. corporate market also spurred sales of Treasuries as a hedge, they said. >>
