I think Newt conveys, albeit in tame language, the notion that the UN has outlived its usefulness and our State Department should not be pursuing UN involvement in American affairs (such as when and with whom we fight wars).

Actually Gingrich's rant is a unwitting condemnation of Bush's policy of pre-eminent American military power and the policy of pre-emption. In fact he complains on a point about which the WH has published a doctrine. And he targets Powell squarely, so much so that the WH felt the need to defend him.

Al, I think this is definitely a setup just like they did with T. Lott. Someone outside the administration attacks the person; Bush comes to the attacked person's support because he is a 'good guy'; the rest of the Rep. party begins to howl like werewolves on the nite of a full moon; Bush grows silent; shortly after, the attacked person is axed. I believe we are witnessing Powell's last days. Rumsfeld will get his way.

The only bright star in the dark side may be leaving soon.
