I've never seen it applied in that way.

Usually the cases are David against Goliath, so attorney's fees would crush the Plaintiff.

I have seen Rule 11 awards against the Plaintiff AND the lawyer.

A recent one against a lawyer I got to know pretty well during a couple of cases and thought she was pretty good although she did some things that made me scratch my head.

I know she's a single mom with several kids, no idea how she'll pay the judgment.

If I ever see her again I'll ask.

(For non-lawyers, Rule 11 is sanctions for bringing a frivolous case or misbehaving.)
