He placed a huge bet on a surprise rally in a downtrend with no judgement of risk and no plan to exit if wrong. How many people have been taken to the woodshed by the great bear because they made just one bad mistake and then tried, in vain, to cover it up. It seems like greed and ego overpower even the best of men.
