"Mature Businesses"

Oil was a "mature business" in 1897. Standard Oil dominated the playing field, having enjoyed phenomenal growth over the past 20+ years, and was run by a man who inspired fear, hatred, and admiration all rolled into one. Had your great-great grandfather bought shares in this "mature" business back then you would likely not need to bother with SI.

Microsoft is to the information age what Standard Oil was to the industrial age. Software is the lifeblood of the dawning era and there is no purer play on it on the planet than MSFT. Just buy and tuck it away. At the very worst MSFT will eventually become so dominant that it will be broken up like Standard Oil before it, and shareholders will have to "console" themselves with the software equivalents of the Standard Oil "fragments". Companies we now know as Exxon, Chevron, Socal, etc.
