My impression was that the slicing off of the storage division was assumption of not so much debt, but expense. Having put all their eggs in the Y2K basket and getting some rotten turns of events (read however you like) elsewhere, they decided to let ZSS (storage) go pay its own engineering costs and assume the CASD service contracts.

My personal opinion is perhaps this is why Hogan was brought into Zitel in the first place, but I could be letting my risen hackles do the talking.
