All of which is why most smart investors I know (and I'll include myself in that category) have been paying less and less attention to EPS numbers. Instead we're looking at top line growth (or decline), free cash flow, etc.

This is one of the reasons we're seeing more and more companies announce a "great quarter" only to get slammed in the market. The stuff they're still touting in the press releases has lost credibility and the smart money is looking beyond the "press release number."

The analysts, of course, are still happy to use EPS (and even EBIDTA) if it serves their purpose. I'm ignoring them these days too.
