"still nice that sensible opinion was expressed in the editorial section for a change"

Yes & no. IMO, it was far too little far too late.

The NYT had this story for more than a year. Their large
staff of lawyers knew full well that breaking the story the
way they did would expose critical national security secrets
while fighting an ongoing war. And they knew full well that
the angle the NYT was going to play was to attempt to harm
Bush while intentionally remaining silent about all evidence
showing Bush was acting within the powers granted to the
Executive Branch.

The White House claims they had multiple discussions with the
NYT repeatedly asking them to not report this story. Do you
think the White House didn't point out all the legitimate
reasons why this was within the powers of the President?

The NYT brags about their multiple layers of editors & fact
checkers. They had more than a year to gather all the
relevant evidence from every possible source, including the
White House, regarding the legality of those warrantless
wiretaps.

Instead, for nearly two weeks the NYT breathlessly reported
numerous one sided stories that Bush illegally conducted
warrantless wiretaps on Americans. Not once during that time
did they report any of the multiple sources that clearly
indicate that Bush was fully within his established powers to
authorize those wiretaps.

During that time frame, the alternate media widely reported
all manner of legitimate reasons to show Bush was operating
properly.

Like I said earlier, they NYT will use this one late, deeply
buried article to claim they were objective & balanced in
their reporting.
