Another Republican contrarian [Greg Pollowitz 06/06 08:42 AM]
From The Hill:
President Bush's overall approval rating is mired in the low 30s, and those numbers almost directly mirror the amount of support he's getting for his handling of the Iraq war in other polls.
But while other Republican candidates might admit problems in Iraq and emphasize the importance of success, Tennessee 1st District House candidate Richard Roberts (R) is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to tell voters that he thinks the president has been doing a great job in that regard.
The semiretired LandAir executive has shelled out at least $150,000 of his personal money on TV and radio spots that show him praising the president.
"I believe President Bush's strategy is right, and I share his belief that our cause is not only just, it's the only way to preserve our values, our freedom and our way of life," Roberts says. He says to leave Iraq now "would be immoral."
Roberts is one of a handful of Republicans vying for their party's nomination to replace Rep. Bill Jenkins (R) in the solidly Republican northeast Tennessee district.
