United States Army Selects TimeStep Secure VPN Solution
from Newbridge Networks: Secure VPN solution meets
stringent U.S. Army security and support standards

NEWS RELEASE TRANSMITTED BY CANADIAN CORPORATE NEWS

FEBRUARY 7, 2000

FORT KNOX, KENTUCKY--Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN; TSE: NNC)
today announced that the U.S. Army Recruiting Command (USAREC) has
chosen to deploy the TimeStep Secure VPN (virtual private network)
Solution from Newbridge Networks. The Command procured the
TimeStep solution for more than 14,000 remote dial-up users
because of its adherence to government and industry standards, and
DoD PKI (Department of Defense Public Key Infrastructure) support.
The remote communication solution is being deployed from U.S. Army
recruiting offices worldwide to recruiting headquarters located at
Fort Knox, KY.

"We evaluated several VPN vendors over a six month period and
selected the TimeStep solution based on its overall performance,
integration, DoD PKI compliance, and feature set," said Shawn
Clay, Chief, Data Branch, U.S. Army Recruiting Command. "Newbridge
Networks delivers on a reliable and comprehensive VPN platform
better suited for USAREC's remote user environment than the other
products evaluated."

One of the factors in selecting the TimeStep Secure VPN Solution
from Newbridge Networks was the incorporation of the DoD PKI - a
critical element in authenticating DoD users. PKIs ensure user
authentication for the purposes of communication throughout both
internal and external networks, providing the foundation necessary
for secure communications. As such, the Newbridge(r) 130 Secure
VPN Client met the USAREC's requirement for authenticating over
14,000 remote dial-up users accessing mission-critical systems.

"This selection by the U.S Army Recruiting Command reinforces our
commitment to a scalable, robust solution with an emphasis on
industry standards," said Tim Hember, Vice President, VPN,
Newbridge Networks. "We value this relationship and will continue
to build a VPN solution that is feature-rich and ideal for
large-scale deployments."

Further to the support of the DoD PKI, the U.S. Department of
Defense requires strict adherence to industry standards, such as
FIPS 140-1, and IPSec. The TimeStep solution is fully
IPSec-compliant and has been certified as FIPS 140-1, level two
compliant; a standard that is required of all cryptographic
products before federal clients, such as the U.S. Army, will
purchase them. By ensuring that it is virtually impossible for an
intruder to tamper with the module, FIPS 140-1 standard compliance
makes encryption products better equipped to protect sensitive
communications, especially within the Department of Defense.

The Newbridge Solution was noted for its virtual tunneling
features, which enable mobile users to log in to their privately
addressed corporate network, from any ISP, and surf the Internet
transparently without requiring Network Address Translation (NAT).
The virtual tunneling capability also provides valuable
flexibility in the design process of full VPN architecture, which
involves increased security planned by the Command for the coming
year.

In addition to VPN client software, the Newbridge 237 Secure VPN
gateway, an IPSec-compliant hardware device suitable for high
bandwidth applications for large-scale deployments, was selected
and deployed for the central server locations of the U.S. Army
Recruiting Command. The Newbridge 237 was deployed for its
ability to handle 2000 simultaneous sessions and greater than 70
Mb/s throughput.
