Well, this bit of information from the SBA says it is 52%.

Granted, the SBA has an agenda, so the number may be skewed to favor small business, but it sounds about right to me. Numbers I've seen in the past indicate that about 60% of employment is in small businesses.

Of course, this will vary somewhat depending on your definition of "small." The SBA defines it as any business with less than 500 people and includes in the number home-based and part-time businesses that may be run by a person who is also employed full-time elsewhere.
