One problem with all of this is how do you stop heteros from doing civil unions just for the perks? No need. Already have common law marriages. In Texas, if I'm not mistaken, if you live together for more than a year, have three official documents together (bank accounts, car notes, leases), and refer to each other as husband and wife, you're hitched.
