Critics say the estate tax as it is now reduces some of the nation's economic inequality, and they insist that its repeal would benefit the very wealthiest families at a time when the government is running large budget deficits.

As a former practicing CPA I say that is a PILE OF BUNK. Why not let the critics explain why when Estate tax was basically CONFISCATORY in nature (rates over 70%) the MELLONS, KENNEDYS, ROCKEFELLERS, etc etc etc. amassed HUGE ESTATES which exist TO THIS DAY. The ONLY people hurt by estate taxes are the MILDLY RICH. They dont have big enough estates to afford to set up the trusts, offshore entities etc necessary to set up and administer. I could accept a plan where the first 5 million was exempt (indexed for inflation of course) and a graduated tax thereafter, but if you want such a plan to REALLY effect the RICH then you must OUTLAW the entities that can escape, no matter the size. I'd like to see the KENNEDY's respond to THAT. jdn
