Sorry, I never heard of this before. May be a clip of M-16 bullets will do a better job<G>. I have no idea the type of pipe they were using.

Some of the city water pipes are in very bad shapes. The scale build up in the pipes cut the flow rates significantly. The scale has to be removed very slowly by adding controlled amount of chemicals. The slow shedding of the small particles due to this treatment can cause a lot of headache as well. The water clarity and quality suffer dramatically. However, this is the only way to restore the capacity of the very old pipes without replacing them. We would not have so much problem if some of the treatment technologies available a hundred year ago.
