The power of formations in a world where hand to hand combat is common was awesome. For instance to get to hand to hand combat with a Roman Legion in full rank order required penetrating a couple layers of pikes, which would immediately reduce your ranks by one to two rows of soldiers. Then you had tightly packed swordsmen with interlocking shields and short swords to swing in tight formations. Even calvary had a difficult time penetrating well formed legions. The name of the game then was to flank the opponent. Attacking head on was suicide, but if you flanked them you could cut through their ranks much more easily.
