Tom,

I'm sure that it is done. Frequently chips are rated to operate
within certain temperatures, for example. Another test
for logic would be a "brown out" test whrere the chips supply
voltage is lowered to see the precise vaoltage where it starts malfunctioning. There are tons of tests.

Some Mfrs will have more stringent specs than others. I remember
working for a co that used computers (I think Leading Edge was
the brand, but I'm not 100% certain of my memory) where the disk drives were often stamped "rejected by IBM".
