In any event, I really don't want to rehash this old argument.
I think it's too late. :)

The problem is that people on both ends of the political spectrum have so destroyed the possibility of rational and impersonal dialogue, that it is now almost impossible to discuss a specific fact and keep the exchange limited to the smaller question at hand. It always ends up being a recapitulation of everything.

Confining this problem to only the left is a mistake. The Ann Coulters and Michael Savages of the world are just as despicable as the Al Frankens and do just as much damage. Political discourse between differing points of view is hard enough without telling people they are traitors or even that their brains are scrambled. One can only conclude when that is allowed, that there is no real desire for communication or understanding. You wind up with a pep squad of like-minded people who circle the verbal wagons at any perceived threat which to me isn't the definition of Politics for Pros.

Our nation is vulnerable, I agree. And I don't believe that everyone who has disagreed with the war or doesn't back Bush's decisions and attitude, is "steeped in stupidity, ignorance, arrogance and liberal sprinkling of dishonesty".
Until shades of grey can at least be acknowledged and discussed without insult, with some modicum of mutual respect, the climate of ugliness and division will continue. It is an individual's choice whether to fight that or to contribute to it. Making a judgment based on a perception of group "belongingness" rather than listening to the opinion is immediate defeat. I don't believe we can give up on this, no matter how tired we are.
