I found it interesting that during November,1996, Ampex ramped up its negotiations with the drive makers at around the same time that there were at least 4 technical papers presented on keepered media during MMM '96 by parties including Western Digital.
1) EB-12 High density recording with keepered media and planar heads
T. M. Coughlin, Consultant for Ampex Corporation, Redwood City, CA 94063, J. R. Hoinville, Maxtor Corporation, 2190 Miller Drive, Longmont, CO 80501-6744, B. R. Gooch, Consultant for Ampex Corporation, Redwood City, CA 94063 J. M. Kimmal, HMT Technology Corp., 1055 Page Ave., Fremont, CA 94538, and J. E. Monson, Harvey Mudd College, 301 Twelfth St., Claremont, CA 91711-5990
2) BB-05 Effects of Cr- and magnetic-bias on read/write and noise characteristics of CoCrTa/Cr longitudinal thin-film media.
Brij B. Lal and Michael A. Russak, HMT Technology, Fremont, CA 94538
3) DQ-09 The four discrete magnetic states of keepered media
W. B. Reed, U. Cohen, D. R. Hollars, and R. B. Zubeck, Velocidata, Inc., Santa Clara, CA 95054
4) DQ-13 Magnetic recording performance of keepered media
T. M. Coughlin, Y. S. Tang, and E. M. T. Velu, Western Digital Corporation, Santa Clara, CA 95054 |
