Let's have a little semi-off topic discussion/poll.............

Question: What do you think was one of the best off the wall marketing moves (not only internet) by retail companies this year?

My answer:
I think that the Christmas Gift Registry initiated by Toys-R-Us was the best method of drawing in potential customers and increasing sales.

I think Aleta posted about it originally. The child/customer enters the store and is issued a scanning device. The customer then proceeds to scan in the gifts that s/he would like to receive for Christmas. On completion of the scanning tour, the information is downloaded to Toys-r-Us' computer system and made available worldwide.

Relatives and friends then go to their local TRU and ask for the list. If they purchase an item on the list, that item is removed so that there will in essence be no duplicate gifts at Christmas.

1) The program is making it easier on shoppers.
2) Kids are seemingly saying, "Toys-r-Us has anything and everything I need.
3) By telling the potential gift givers that a list is available at TRU, the receiver is essentially locking in sales for TRU before the gift giver ever enters the store.

**** Four Stars
