Patrick: Investment is not blind adherence to a single principle. Buy and hold comes from the need to emphasize discipline. If you don't know any better way, buy and hold is the single best principle. But like Berkshire, you still need to select when and what to buy and when to sell. Trigger happy selling is what should be avoided. The main reason stock prices are still staying at high p/es is same as that for Real Estate. Good properties are scarce in supply. But the biggest money makers are good traders. At the same time I ain't complaining when my neighborhood properties doubled in value in 6 years.
