The illegal immigrants in the US are a huge economic boon. If their activity and employment are stifled US productivity will suffer. So, the sensible questions are these: how do you retain the benefits the illegals provide and have them pay some of the public costs they cause?

Whatever the faults of Bush's or Pence's proposals they do attempt to address these concerns which is a great deal more intelligent than the ravings of isolationists like Buchanan.

The most serious long term problem caused by illegal immigrants is that they tend not to assimilate well with the the greater US population and their children (which ought to be a huge payoff for the US) consequently don't become as productive as they might be. This is particularly a problem with regard to Mexican illegals because of their proximity to their country of origin: it's too easy for them not to make a real commitment to the US, or depending on your point of view, too difficult, (actually it's both).

Making the illegal legal is something that needs really intelligent discussion going beyond wittering about "fairness".

Think what effect Buchannan's proposal would have on California's aggie and construction industries - they'd have to shut down! I exaggerate: The cost of food and housing would increase enormously.
