AuraGen ICS Available as a Solution to Pollution and Gas Efficiency Initiative for Long Haul Trucks
EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 10, 2001--Aura Systems, Inc. (OTC BB: AURA) announced today that its AuraGen ICS mobile power source is available to solve the problem of long haul truck idling, recently addressed by the National Energy Policy Development Group's (NEPD).
The NEPD recommended among other things that the President direct the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) to reduce emissions from long haul trucks that routinely idle their engines for considerable periods of time. NEPD further added that alternatives to idling such as the development of auxiliary power units to provide electrical power for trucks as an alternative to idling would be encouraged through industry partnership agreements between truck manufacturers the DOT and the EPA.
Aura has recently demonstrated such a system at the International Construction and Utility Equipment Exposition (ICUEE) in Kentucky. The AuraGen ICS provides 6,000 watts of electricity with the truck engine running, idling or completely off. The ICS controls the power cycle completely so that the driver does not need to worry about his electrical loads when turning on or off the ignition. When the engine is off, power is provided by an auxiliary battery pack that is sized to meet the energy required. When the engine is turned back on, the battery pack is automatically recharged by the AuraGen, which continues to provide the same high quality electrical power. Power is available from the ICS as either 240V or 120V at 60 Hz. AC, or at 12 or 24 VDC. A similar system based on Aura's military version, the VIPER, is currently being delivered to the Army.
The AuraGen ICS can easily be integrated into long haul truck rigs. It will allow the long haul trucker to make routine rest stops on the road and turn off his engine without giving up the use of any of the electrical appliances that ensure safe and comfortable working conditions. Devices such as engine pre-warmers, air conditioners, refrigerators, microwave ovens and televisions can all be used without idling the engine. This will completely eliminate emissions during rest stops without the need of a large capital investment into truck stop electrification. It will also allow truckers to pull over when ever the need regardless of the availability of a rest or stop location, thus improving safety. The high efficiency of the AuraGen results in no additional fuel used by the truck to recharge the battery pack during normal driving. |
