(these charts exclude people who present themselves at official border entries to apply for asylum) . The US already has multiple pedestrian barriers where crossing is most frequent. Vehicle barriers or impeding terrain is sufficient for most regions. The entire border region is under direct or electronic surveillance. In an earlier era, Pat Nixon shakes hands with residents accross the Mexican side of the border. The same site today, with one section of the fence painted sky blue - which it turns out is a terrible idea as it soon rusts, becoming an eyesore.
