"We Deserve to be Trod Upon"

The other day, I invoked the Revolutionary War slogan "Don't Tread on Me" as part of the reason why most Americans, not just conservatives, support an aggressive response to 9/11. Reader Curtis Coman responds that
the Left has its own version of this slogan: "We Deserve
to be Trod Upon." It's stated explicitly by Ivy League
professors and big-paper columnists, and implicitly in
the relentless efforts of people like Kos and
Congressional Democrats to forestall virtually all
attempts to protect ourselves as a nation.
Mr. Coman has a point. In its most virulent form, the sentiment he describes finds expression in the claim of Ward Churchill that the actual victims of 9/11 were "little Eichmanns." In its more subtle form, it impels liberals to ask, with respect to psychopathic killers, "why do they hate us?"
