Matthew,

I can attempt to answer you this question. What they are speaking of is the city water mains that deliver water all over the city. It is not unusual for a 6" diameter pipe to be reduced to less than an inch, drastically reducing water flow. I am not certain of the criteria, but a minimal flow must be maintained for fire fighting reasons or the city loses it's fire rating, affecting everyone's insurance cost.

HERC has worked out a system whereby they go from hydrant to hydrant and clean the section of pipe between them, rinse it and put it back into service. This is done in approx a 24 hour period.

The shooting of a large ball bearing was simply like shooting a gun to unplug a plugged barrell. Consequences were often not quite what was intended.

I did hear of a city crew trying to unplug a frozen sewer line in some town in Montana release compressed air into a sewer line......shot some woman right off a toilet! <L>
