Hemmingway used the quote, it is true.

They were dissimilar men in many ways; but they clearly shared an understanding of despair and suffering.

I also hate fires. One almost took our home when I was a child. There is no more helpless feeling than beating out flames while they surge past you left and right.

I have always thought that was one of the most compassionate poems ever penned.
