The San Francisco Chronicle today carried an interview with Ray Lane as
the main feature on the front of the business section. The article can
be seen on their web site at:

Let's take Novell. There was (a company) that was very public (in trying
to recruit me). They came after me and said, "We know we want Ray Lane."
And I looked at that and said, "Hey, that's a lot of money." But that's
the only thing they have. They just kept raising the ante and made the
money so attractive that I had to go to my partner, Larry, and say,
"That's a lot of money." But I had no interest in Novell. I think (new
chief executive) Eric Schmidt will be obscure at Novell. He can turn
around the financials and get the company growing. He can move their
stock from $8 to $15 so everybody's happy again. But is Novell going to
be on the front page? Are you going to be writing about Novell like you
write about Microsoft, Apple and Oracle? No, you're not.
