Raines is about as Liberal as you are.

Oh, please, Bill, you don't know the details of Raines' politics well enough to post that claim. Nor, really, for that matter, the details of mine. Raines clearly leaves something to be desired as a manager; we knew that from the Auletta pieces long ago. At the time, I thought the discomfort was about the level of that with the previous managing editor who drew so much fire from the staff, forget his name. Now there is little doubt, it's much higher.

I expect the Times to try to work its way past this imbroglio, wait for things to get quieter, and then for Raines to take a leave of absence to work on a book or some such. That's the best scenario. A worse one involves some more public bloodletting.

As for the charges about Dowd and the Kissinger charge, the right wing is doing itself no good. Makes the larger charge against Raines' management style less credible. And leads to a circle the wagons response at the Times.
