Thomas, the filing does not say that Iomega is going to issue more stock now, just that the company wants to authorize the issuance when deemed necessary. A stock split (although I agree with David that it makes no sense now) is one possible reason for the need for new shares, since there aren't twice as many shares available as issued at the present. Another reason, which was mentioned, is to have shares available for employee stock options. A third might be to purchase other companies with (Microsoft should be a good company to own ;^)), so that a cash drain is not necessary. There are a myriad of other reasons, some good, some not (we will probably be filled in on the not-so-good reasons in due course), and, IMHO, having the flexibility to issue the shares is probably a good thing for the company.
