Was thinking of this chart and this source (you need paid access to see full details, time frame.

Take the second chart you posted and run it back two more years. BB and Palm dying, iPhone much more prominent at its peak. 40% versus other numbers depend upon the source you're using and precisely how you count it, but there's no doubt, using any metrics, that iPhone's *relative* share strength was better a few years back, especially if you factor trends (e.g., growth rate and direction) of each.
