It works better if it's aged a bit, especially if it has some bedding included. Don't want too much nitrogen. Pruning may also help.

I had some wild plums when I moved here. They tended to shed the branch tips which were very similar to thorns and hard on mower tires. When one went through the sole of my boot and into my foot I cut the darn things down.
