How about if GE picks up AMD for pocket change and invests $7.5 Billion into its FABs?

Or what if UMC or VIA picks up AMD and makes it the chip of choice for Asian OEMs?

Be careful what you wish for....

I really wish that would happen. A non-chipmaker, even a computer manufacturer, that picks up a design house usually ends up spitting it out.

For example, Compaq with Alpha and SGI with Sun. To some degree Apple with the PowerPC alliance. These are people who know the computer business but not the microprocessor business.

Do you really think GE would invest 7.5 billion in FABs
that depreciate most of their value in a couple of years.
GE managers are too smart for that.

The problem is not the capital but managers to use the
capital effectively. This is what Intel has in spades
and other companies do not. Okay, there have been a few
screwups recently but who has not screwed up in the mania
of the last few year?
