Defrag …

When Windows defrags a disk, it first checks the data in the folder \WINDOWS\APPLOG. These files record the use of the various applications Windows recognises. With this information, Defrag decides where to locate the files associated with these applications for best performance. Windows Task Monitor, has the responsibility of updating these files.

I haven’t experimented in this area much, since I’m content to have the files moved. If curiosity overcomes me, I’ll start by disabling Task Monitor in MSCONFIG and emptying the APPLOG folder before defragging. I’ll then re-instate the original conditions before a second defrag for a comparison.

Again, my effort costs will be lower by using Norton’s Speed Disk. If I used Windows’ defrag, the time cost would prove prohibitive.

Cheers, PW.
