"Eric: what's your assessment of why G3 PBs are not available for
shipment? "

As you know all of the PowerBooks are being made at the Cork Ireland plant. The reason for this is supposedly due to tariff on LCD screens. The plant has been running at very low production rate until last Tuesday because most of the workers had been on vacation for a number of weeks now. It's an European thing. I suspect Apple was decided to take advantage of this vacation and allow the supply of some of the components to catch up a bit.

The good thing is that the low supply wasn't caused by production problems or something that could affect us for the rest of the year. It appears to be a short term issue. Since they've been making these PowerBooks for a while and the supply of components had a chance to catch up, I don't think they expect to encounter any problems.

I've heard some estimates of unit shipment numbers so far this quarter and indeed they are on the low side. Given the low supply and high demand for these kick ass PowerBooks, it's no wonder that people were complaining that there weren't enough of them to go around. With the plant being on vacation for a big part of this quarter that is understandable. Because of this unexpected turn of event, I no longer think my original estimate of 150K is realistic anymore; I do think we can still ship about 120K PowerBook this quarter as long as things go well in September. Despite the PowerBook supply issue for the last 2-3 weeks I still expect Q4 to be very strong because 1) 120K PB would still generate very respectable laptop revenue and 2) revenue from the consumer line (iMac/AIO) is apparently significantly higher than I had expected in the preliminary estimate. Exactly how strong Q4 is going to be...we'll have to discuss that in detail next week.

One wild card that we'll have to keep an eye on is the possibility that Apple will switch to the new 1.9V chips over the next couple of months. These chips run faster and draw less power so there is a lot of incentive for Apple to use them. 2 VAR I spoke with felt that Apple does have plans to switch to those chips in the near future. One other source seems to confirm this. Hopefully the transition will go smoothly and doesn't cause production complications or parts shortages.
