When the gold was found by Marshall, it was not by accident. They had been washing gravel in the tail race of the mill for gold as it had been thot likely. The found some colours in a pan and brought them to the cabin where a women from Carolina was preparing some food for the work party. This was in 1847. She took the material and tested it by boiling it in lye and from her experience on the Carolina placer where she had worked, she declared the substance to be gold. They were not sure but Marshall took it to Sutter, and averred it was probably gold. Sutter took it to an apothecary who weighed it in water, and then tested it with acid and finally aqua regia, and confirmed it to be gold. Sutter had informed some Mormons about this, and the rush was on. It also may have established the standard of apothecary weighing system of troy ounces and grains for the metal.
