Some observations made while perusing the white paper on AXC's new double density DST product, available for all to see at ampex's home page: Very large list of unique features on page 2, including ability to handle small medium and large cartridges, also offers a model of the drive that approaches 20mb/sec(presumably this must be the one that was optimized by the tinkering GC guys you mentioned yesterday Gus) read error rates less than 10 to the 14th power bytes read average search speeds up to 1600MB/sec and many other things. Was impressed with the # of unique features. Also, its backwards compatible with the old single density tapes Head life is extended by some new features that result in less wear and tear, and heads only take 30 minutes to replace in the field, as opposed to most head designs having to be sent back for replacement. It's track density per inch is 10X IBM's Magstar product! And my favorite: "Many alternatives exist to provide a LONG LINE OF ENHANCEMENTS TO THE 19MM TAPE TECHNOLOGY FROM AXC" Good sales growth from DST should finally give us an up year in sales after years of declining sales due to discontinued products.
