Perhaps I am misreading Rubin, but it seems to me that the distinctions--anti-Semitism, Islamism, and reaction against Israeli actions--he seeks to make in this piece aren't quite as clear as he'd make them seem. No doubt all play some part in Hamas's stance vis-a-vis Israel, more of one at any one time than any of the others. A varying and toxic mix, but never a clearly delineated one as far as emphasis is concerned. Not a recipe for baking a cake, in other words, unchanging and immutable

I think the constant variability of the anti-Israeli and anti-Semitic justifications is what makes the conflict so intractable. A real witches' brew, particularly as the core of the bias is religiously based.

And we're about to see another explosion take place as a result of the soldier's kidnapping.
