Subject: ****WESTERN DIGITAL TO UNVEIL NEW TECHNOLOGY TOMORROW

IRVINE, CALIFORNIA, U.S.A., 1997 FEB 10 (NB) -- By Patrick McKenna.
While details have not been specified, industry analysts expect
Western Digital Corp. [NYSE:WDC] to introduce a technology which will
significantly increase performance of removable storage peripherals
such as CD-ROM drives and floppy drives. Called SDX for storage data
acceleration, the new technology will be based in hard drives with
SDX technology.

SDX involves a new interface system connecting devices to hard drives
implementing SDX. Early applications of the technology will focus on
CD-ROM drive performance which has to date relied on faster spin
rates to increase performance. SDX uses sophisticated hard drive
caching technology which is capable of working with most existing
drives.

Additionally, new SDX CD-ROM drives which leverage SDX technology are
planned for shipment in the second calendar quarter when Western
ships hard drives with the new technology. More tomorrow.
