Dear C.R.EARLE: Sorry to learn of your frustration. My mechanic does simple tests like have been described and if you have the work done there the tests are free otherwise about $25. Sure seems to me like you are getting a runaround there. Our dealer rates here in S. Fla. are I believe 60 or 65 an hour but you can certainly do better with outside mechanics. For something as major as an engine though I would guess you want either the dealer or a very reliable mechanic. Just remember, if you go through with this change everything you can afford to while the engine is out. They should NOT charge you labor for things like Water Pump, engine mounts, possibly transmission mount etc etc. We have a place here in Fla. called Savanna Jones which stocks a lot of jeep mechicals for about 50% of what you would pay at the dealer. You can have it shipped out for overnight delivery. Savanna Jones is located in Fl Lauderdale, Fl. JDN
