Gold Fields' plan to add 1.5 million ounces of gold per year from outside South Africa by 2009 "is very much within our reach," Jacobsz said.

The company has earmarked 350,000 ounces to come from ramp-ups at Gold Fields' Ghanaian and Australian operations.

Peruvian project Cerro Corona, which could add 350,000 ounces, is under a final review, with a decision due before the year ends. Gold Fields is closely watching the political situation in Peru, which Cockerill said has deteriorated ahead of elections there.

"Very strongly on the horizon" is Essakane, a Burkina Faso joint venture between Gold Fields and junior miner Orezone Resources (OZN), Jacobsz said. It could add 250,000 to 300,000 ounces per year in its initial stages.

Gold Fields' Jacobsz also pointed to "two due diligence teams on the ground ... running the rule over projects," but he declined to elaborate further.
