I am always intrigued how many ex-military tend to elevate themselves above their civilian counterparts. Don't get me wrong, serving in the armed forces is an accomplishment to be proud of but not at the expense of the people who paid their salaries.

I agree. There is something remarkably noble in the willingness to give up one's life. But I would rather that the praise come from the civilians, not from within. The latter smacks of condescension and looks quite ugly.
