DV (Digital Video Camera) is a lot like Motion JPEG. As you said, a lot more storage space is needed, and it looks as good as MPEG2.
But look at the compression rates of the two: DVC/JPEG = 7:1
MPEG 2 or1 = 200:1

If you wanted to put your video on a CD or store it to disc, think of the storage required. Cd (640MB) 1.5 hours of video with MPEG
Zip (100MB) 12minutes of video with MPEG

With DV.........CD 3 minutes
ZIP 27 seconds

By the way, Data Translations was demonstrating their MPEG editing software at the NAB show.
